REHUGO Analysis – Observation: Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached- artist: Lindsay

B. In this article, the picture shows two people who have different perspectives about money and the community. One side shows that money should be used on something more important than fireworks but the other side shows that the community loves having the sight of fireworks being explosive. It shows that the government supplying the community with certain activities does not see that their activities are worthless if their community is in dept.

C. With the two people sitting down watching the fireworks, you can sight that they are both enjoying the sight of things exploding. But with the captions that have two different meanings on each side, the two people have different opinions about what the community should and could have. The person on the left, looks more mature and seems to know more about what the community should have while the person on the left is dressed like a young man that still has the mind of a eight year old boy. With most communities being bankrupt, civilians still rather have something that is enjoying than having a little savings being involved so things can be normal again.

D. The cartoon symbolizes the problem most human beings have today. We rather have spend our money on things that can disappear within a minute. The visual picture shows that their community is in need of spending their money on things that actually would improve their area. But with the man on the right, he states that the community likes fireworks which indicate that most communities do not see what is in store for them if they keep spending their money on useless things.

REHUGO Analysis – Observation: Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached – artist: Rina Ayuyang

B. In this cartoon, the artist depicts an Asian-American family, with members of three separate age groups, lined up on a stage and being presented as “This season’s cast of ‘It’s a Wonderful Life.” The backdrop juxtaposes this idea to highlight the presence of numerous characteristics of a demanding economy that undermine a family’s potential economic success in society.

C. An Asian-American child, mother, and grandfather are pictured on a stage, each holding frustrated facial expressions and body language. Behind them is a backdrop shaped as a cityscape with terms like “education cuts, economy, glass ceiling, crime, [and] affirmative action” sprawled across it, and the way it surrounds each of the three people implies that such grievances upset each person. This broadens the scope of target audiences; it shows that youth, adults, and seniors are all affected, which heightens the importance of reform to benefit all of society. Terms like glass ceiling, immigration, and affirmative action tie in directly with the artist’s use of Asian characters, since the terms most commonly limit the financial successes of non-white immigrant families. The visual’s effectiveness is heightened through the irony that the subtitle provides by claiming a “wonderful life” when economic issues that stress and demand from a common family are more prevalent than simple prosperity.

D. The visual brings awareness about the actual economic struggles that families live with – especially those who aren’t of Anglo descent. Economic struggles concerning employment, education cuts, crime, welfare, and health care ultimately heighten a common man’s taxes, thus undermining the possible maintenance of financial stability. Non-Anglo families are even more undercut by immigration struggles, affirmative action, and the glass ceiling concept which all further limit their possible financial successes. The difficulty and demands of the economy thus cause social discontent and add onto the distresses that a family has to face.

REHUGO Analysis — Observation: Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon attached — Artist: Mike Lester.

B. This cartoon by Mike Lester shows a family behind a white picket fence as prisoners while the value of their home is falling. It illustrates how the fall of the housing market is affecting families, who are in debt because of it, all over the country.

C. Lester is very effective in showing how families feel like they are trapped from the housing market crash. The visual shows a family of three and their dog, complete with prisoner garb and a harmonica, as prisoners behind a white fence that is supposed to be like prison bars. Ironically, white picket fences and owning a home usually symbolize the all-American family and the American dream, while this cartoon depicts it as something that keeps families trapped, mostly in debt. The family also looks as if they are frightened by their home when a home is supposed to be a place where one feels safe.

D. The crash of the housing market has taken its toll on many families in the United States. In many towns and cities, families are suffering from foreclosures and debt. What was once the American dream is now a terrible idea in today’s economy. Instead, families are renting homes and moving from place to place to escape it. To face this problem, there isn’t much anyone can do except try to stimulate the economy and the housing market.

REHUGO Analysis- Visual: Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon attached- artist: Len Hawkins

B. The visual comments on the societal trend that community today is often characterized by many of the problems it faces as opposed to previous years, in which communities faced minute issues and focused more on unity. The image depicts the changing role of a community center because of the prominence of negative issues such as drugs and violence.

C. The cartoon is extremely effective in expressing the prominence of problems and issues in today’s society. The visual presents a community center on which posted on the front wall are upcoming events associated with problems in the community such as drugs and violence. In addition, the windows of the community center contain metal bars, symbolizing a prison house. Ironically, a community center is meant to positively bind the community together, however, this cartoon shows a community negatively bound together by problems such as lack of respect, drugs, and violence very similar to a prison. Initially, community centers were places of socialization and intermingling through activities and hobbies for better unification among citizens. The image depicts the communities of today which are focused and overwhelmed with unfavorable issues. The visual reveals how much communities have changed in the last few decades in terms of the prominence of negative issues by the expressions and reactions of the two elderly men, who are in appall and dismay of the change in the purpose of the community center. Community centers were merely a place for “jumble sales” but now have become prisons, or places dawning on problems.

D. It is a fact that there is a much larger prominence of communal issues and problems today than ever before. The image presents that drugs, violence, and morale have become such a predominant problem to the extent that our community centers are revolved around these issues. Communal affairs have changed dramatically in the last decades due to several factors such as increased population and negative influence from the media. In order to address this problem, state government should provide more funds to prevent predominating issues. For example, the government should fund drug education and prevention programs in schools like D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education). Also, the state governments should advocate the use of community centers for unification among citizens via activities and hobbies or local decisions. Community centers should provide a welcoming atmosphere for each individual in the community and make them feel a part of the environment in which they live.

REHUGO Analysis- Observation

A.      Cartoon Attached: Artist- Randy Glasbergen

B.       In this cartoon Glasbergen is showing the effects that technology has on the human brain. It shows the effect of how thickheaded technology has caused the human brain to be.

C.      This cartoon shows the effect of what can happen to the human brain if it relies on technology too much. The visual shows how technology has made the human hopeless, that he's unable to trust his brain to remember how to come back up the driveway. This also shows that it is our own fault that we tend to use technology so often that when it is not in our grasp we do not know what to do.

D.      The implication of this visual is that technology keeps growing outrageously, to a point where little kids need it to function their brains. Technology is affecting the human brain from an early age, parents by their kids these gadgets. Yet most damage their brains, because now their unable to do things without their technology in reach.

REHUGO: Observation
A. Attached at the bottom
B. In this cartoon, the cartoonist is bringing up the issue of ex-convicts that are released from jail that are now out in the world. Recently, with the surplus of convicted felons in jails, there are too many people in jails and it is getting over crowded. However, with the economic depression our nation is in during this epoch, the construction of new jails is not an option. Therefore, in order to resolve this predicament, government officials are letting minor convicted members have an early release to create more space for people who committed much worse felonies.
C. This picture is effective because it appeals to the audience through humor by the ex-convict saying he was in a “gated community.” Typically when one says he or she lived in a “gated community,” it is assumed that it was a sophisticated neighborhood where gated fences were required in order to preserve the peace of the civilians. However, in the ex-convict’s case, his “gated community” is referring to a jail he was recently released from. Also, the visual is quite ironic because the “gated community” the ex-convict was from is the complete opposite of a typical “gated community.” By the irony within this visual, the drawer creates a humorous tone that appeals to the audience by his use of pathos.
D. The trend of releasing minor convicts from jails has both its pros and cons. On the pros side, it creates room for more dangerous threats to our society to be put in to jail and therefore creating a more peaceful environment. However, many ex-convicts’ time in jail will be cut allowing more ex-convicts to roam the streets in the city. Depending on how these ex-convicts react towards their early release will determine how the decision of releasing these ex-convicts will affect our society. Hopefully, these convicts will see this early release as a glimpse of hope for change for the better helping the community grow.

REHUGO Analysis – Observation: Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached - Artist : Michael DiMotta

B. This cartoon portrays the societal trend of unreasonable adoption cases. DiMotta shows an adoption agency denying a loving couple their adoption request, but in turn granting abusive parents with a child through adoption.

C. The visual displays a couple that registered to adopt a child. The couple is dressed casually as if they were normal people; and the books indicates that the couple is educated and can most likely handle being parents. They have already prepared a neatly put together room with toys for their child which they were going to adopt, but their adoption request was denied. On the other hand, a family who has created an extremely dangerous and unsanitary environment for their children is approved for an adoption. The picture on the bottom portrays abusive parents and terrible role models for their children, as the mother is smoking and drinking many cans of beer. The family on the bottom carries a negative vibe, as the mother seems to be unhappy and the father seems to be angry at a child, holding him precariously in the air. The boy in the air seems to be worried that he is going to abused in some way, it’s obvious that the young man fears his father by his facial expression. Also, they have children running around the house as if they have no control over their children. By showing two different perspectives on both families, it would logical that the neatly kept family should have been accepted on their request for an adoption, but due to unfair adoption cases, adoption agencies approve a couple who are not fit to be parents. This is effective because shows corruption or laziness within adoption agencies as they should be inspecting the homes of the families, making sure that they are fit to become parents and tend to their new child's every need.

D. Many Americans look to adoption as a final resort, because they can not create a child of their own for many different reasons. Some families are prepared in advance for the child they are expecting, but in turn they rejected due to unfair adoption cases. The cartoon is slightly exaggerated, but for the most part is true. Children who are adopted are not always adopted by horrible people, but it is a possibility that their new parents are abusive and a bad example, but for the small percentage of good families being rejected to adopt a child; adoption agencies should have fair cases to provide a good family for them. A child put up for adoption deserves a family who can provide for them, set a good example, and love them.

Smeltzer, Steve. "'And you honey, how was your day at the playstation?'" Cartoon Stock. http://www.cartoonstock.com/cartoonview.asp?catref=ssen4. Cartoon. 24 February 2011.

B. Societal Trend:
Smeltzer uses satire to criticize the dominance of videogames and electronics in the life of America's twenty-first century youth as compared to the formerly active lifestyle of the child and teenager.

C. Effectiveness:
The viewers of this social commentary cartoon see a typical American family at dinner, clearly discussing the day's events with each other. Before the technology age, a common question and answer at the dinner table would regard a sports game, a test at school, the workday, friends, homework, upcoming plans. However, Smeltzer substitutes "your day at the PlayStation" in place of another, more mind and body engaging activity. The mother's quote conveys a certain irony with the typical American family discussion at dinner, and what it has emerged into over the past few years due to technological changes and changes in youth culture. In this cartoon, the visual itself does not depict much like other other cartoons usually do, but rather, the verbal sect of the image typifies the new and modernized meal discussion. Furthermore, the casual tone of the dialogue reflects the unfortunate acceptance of society of an Internet-and-videogame-dominant youth culture. Another aspect of the satirical attitude of Smeltzer lies in the diction of "day," which demonstrates that children and teenagers spend several straight hours in front of a television or computer monitor instead of spending hours playing outside with friends or studying as previous generations did. The genial expressions on the mother, father, and son's faces further represent the social acceptance of and lack of action against this new and negative impact of twenty-first century techonologies on today's children.

D. Implications of the Trend
Indeed, today's technologies have positive and negative impacts on society as a whole. New and shocking advancements improve medicine, education, and business, yet negatively influence the lives of people all around the world. Industry and entrepreneurs create all these videogames and internet trends for children for the sake of money, but few people tend to recognize the cultural dependency on and dominance of the digital world, which are not always a good thing. Children need to live the active lives that preceding generations lived not only for their own health and intellect, but also to feel and witness the endless "childhood" that is ever so typified as exhilerating and spontaneous by older generations.

A. Cartoon Attached - Clay Bennett

B. The artist, Clay Bennett, creates an image of a shirt with the words Family Values, with a lipstick stain and a tag with the Republican Political party symbol on it. This shirt depicted looks like a shirt that someone wore when they were having an affair of some sort.

C. This cartoon is a representation of hypocrisy. The artist is referring to the incidents of people claiming Family Values will be demoralized when Republican party members are demoralizing family values by cheating on their wives. This cartoon is an attempt to show the audience that these Republican party members are being hypocritical. When Bennett does this, he lowers the credibility of those members.

D. Bennett uses the shirt as a way of showing that the Republican members wear family values, in other words, Republicans always have family values, much like they always wear shirts. This represents a meaning that contradicts the statements of Republican officials, and may even open the Republican officials' eyes to the idea. Not only are the Republicans unaware of this, but the audience may be unaware of it also, and with this depiction, both Republicans and the audience will feel emotion towards the subject.

A. Cartoon Attached- Artist: Jeff Parker

B. This is political cartoon the newspaper the gentlemen is holding is commenting on the budget cuts, which in this case are in Florida. The newspaper states that they are cutting off so much money that it’s going to cut off an arm and a leg, figuratively, cutting off an arm and a leg meaning that they are cutting off the essential things in schools.

C. Jeff Parker does an excellent job of getting his point across, by comparing schools to a human. Some of essential parts in a human are the arms and legs so having cut them off it would be very difficult to do anything without them. Exactly like money would be to a school, it is one of the most essential things to have. The gentlemen that’s sitting down reading the newspaper also claims that the governor has explained that the budget cuts would be harmless yet he didn’t say it would be that deep as to cutting an “arm.”

D. This political cartoon is correct, money is one of the most essential things to a school and having to cut off and so deep into it, it would cost students and teachers the essential things that they need in their classrooms, figuratively an arm and a leg. These budget cuts can affect the communities because budget cuts could mean poor education and poor education can result to tedious jobs, or no jobs at all, and that can result to impoverished and needy communities. And so just from these deep “harmless” budget cuts it can start a dangerous cycle of underprivileged communities.

REHUGO: observation – political cartoon

A) political cartoon attached by Dave Grandlund
B) In the recent years, the United States economy has been decreasing due to over speculation and buying on credit. Obama, when elected, was faced with the pressing issue over America’s unbalanced money situation. Obama has proposed better health care, and promised to create more jobs for the citizens to help relieve the crisis. While the president try’s to tackle these issues, the small football player with Obama on the jersey, the economic crisis, represented by the gigantic football player, intimidates Obama.
C) Being newly elected and having to face a huge crisis, Obama’s situation is accurately portrayed through the cartoon’s metaphor. By making the economic crisis an enormous intimidating football player, the audience, American citizens, understand the sense of fear Obama must feel. The economic crisis is bigger then the president due to the pressure American citizens put on him to fix the issue, the chance of him losing his political position, and the possible decrease of American status. Being a new president, Obama is unsure of how to resolve the problem and his non-established reputation makes him tiny compared to the economic crisis. While the president is still weary, his position of defense shows that he is going to try to fix America’s problems.
D) Obama’s reforms to change the United State’s economy have affected the community poorly. While Obama fought for his plan for health care, he has yet to create jobs for the people like he promised. The economy is further going down due to the increase of gas prices, and the continued foreclosures. The communities bonds that had been established in earlier years are diminished due to the average person’s financial instability. Our economic downfall influences other countries such as Ireland. The Irish government has experienced tension between political parties and the people, creating a social gap which ruined Ireland’s sense of community as a unified nation. If America’s economy continues to go down, America might see themselves in Ireland’s shoes in the near future.

B. The artist, Frank Cammuso, gives a rather intense visual to the school budget in the New York State (NYS).

C. Cammuso focuses on pathos, being that the school October 20, 2010.
bus is filled with screaming children. The sign in front of the cliff says “NYS Budget Deficit” providing the logos to the cartoon (New York is in a 108.5 million dollar deficit). While quite powerful, the message isn’t too clear and doesn’t provide a proper call to action, so all it is doing is informing the reader of the situation.

D. The severe “drop” of the deficit will affect the board of education, essentially giving schools the boot when it comes to money. Teachers will be laid off and curriculum will grow ever weaker. The driver says his comment in a relaxed way (or at least for a man falling off a cliff), implying that the school board is looking at this problem as if it is just a “pothole” and not a serious threat. The sign is also there to inform travelers of the “cliff” so not observing it would be an act of ignorance, so one could say the New York State Board of Education looked past the warnings.

REHUGO Analysis—Political Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached: Artist: Monte Wolverton

B. In this cartoon Wolverton is showing the effects of the power that congress holds against citizens, in this case immigrants. It also shows the effect that the immigration bill caused separation from the immigrant family.

C. This cartoon shows the effect of what can happen to immigrants, be it a family of one or many the outcome will be the same for all since all are immigrants. The visual also shows the fear of a family being separated because of the immigration bill that would “slice” the family apart. The giant hand represents how powerful senate can be and the ax represents the aggressiveness that the senate can inflict upon. The cartoon also shows a small amount of offence to families in general, for separating families is very disintegrating.

D. The implications of this cartoon is that the senate or any of the officials that can perform this type of act are very bold and fell very little to the family that is suffering or the officials simply have no choice and act out this decision for reasonable purposes. The family that suffers from the decision is the most affected for they are the ones that are being separated not the officials who decided this act.

REHUGO Analysis - Visual: Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attatched - Artist: Dana Summers

B. Artist Dana Summers comments on how the constantly rising gas prices are beginning to become too overwhelming for typical U.S. drivers. Over the past few years, the steadily rising gas prices were simply nothing to fret about, because people needed the gas to get from point A to point B. But now, the prices have risen so much, that they have become too much for many American drivers

C. Summers over exaggerates the sizes of the gas pump compared to the little red car which symbolizes U.S. drivers. By having the gas pump being toppled over by a row of dominoes, the artist suggests that the rising gas prices continued to rise, toppling over until they were too much for most drivers. Summers also foreshadows that Americans will be surprised and overwhelmed if the issue is not addressed through the driver’s facial expression in the little red car.

D. The artist implies that gas prices are much like a stack of dominoes, rising over time and knocking over the next until it gets to the point where the prices are too high and the U.S. is overwhelmed. The slowly rising gas prices have never been top news because most people do not realize that soon the prices will become too much for American drivers to afford.

B.      The author is commenting on the stress that is put on many mothers around the world. Having the responsibilities of not only tending to the children but also having to cook dinner and clean the house is very nerve-raking. Even when husbands try to take some responsibilities off their chests by watching over the children, mothers still have many other responsibilities they must tend to around the house.
C.      In the cartoon, the husband is saying, “"Bye Sweetie. I'll be back with the kids in a couple of hours. Enjoy your alone time, relax.” The mother, who is holding toys and clothes, then says, “Relax?” This effectively shows that even without kids, there are so many more things a mother has to accomplish before she can even think about relaxing.
D.      The author is trying to show that while it is thought that men have all the responsibility bringing in the money to put a roof over his family’s head, the mother is the one stuck at home with her children and the chores around the house. Women have a huge amount of pressure on them and their always on their feet, feeling like they have no time to relax.

Observation REHUGO – Analysis of One Visual
A.    Cartoon Attached – artist: Paulo Coelho
B.     In this cartoon, the artist shows his perspective on how the U.S. was still involved in the Iraq war. He is focusing on the fact that many American citizens have been sent to war. It seems that because of the economic crisis and the numbers of people’s involvement with Iraq, war seems to be an easier way to earning a job than getting a job after achieving a college degree.
C.     This visual shows a soldier standing next to a college graduate, and the soldier says “I figure it’s easier to find a war than a job these days.” The cartoon effectiveness relies on the fact that many U.S. family members are in huge debt and cannot maintain a steady job because of the failing economic issues that are still a problem today just like in 2008. The artist is stating that it seems the easiest job to maintain is a job as a soldier because the U.S. needs all the help they can get. The war has gone on for years, and you can enter in the military right after high school. A college degree is not required for the military, but for many high paying jobs a degree is required.
D.    Currently, our soldiers are still being sent off to war even though leaders have promised to take soldiers home. This promise has still not been fulfilled. The poor economy has caused many people to be without a job for many months, and every family is in huge debt. No one seems to have the money to pay off much even though some people are working with two or three jobs involving minimum wage. The artist wants the viewers (American citizens) to see the problem and to be aware of it. Why is it that the easiest way to get paid is to join the army nowadays? So many men have been taken to support U.S. beliefs, but should we really be involved with other countries when we cannot even fix our own problems?
