REHUGO Analysis – Visual: Cartoon

A. Cartoon Attached – artist: Cathy Thorne

B. In this cartoon, the artist is presenting a viewpoint on the stress put upon many mothers around the globe. Even when their husbands try to take the kids out of the house and give them time to "relax," they still feel they must tend to their usual chores around the house.

C. This visual features a text bubble from the assumed father, which reads "Bye Sweetie. I'll be back with the kids in a couple of hours. Enjoy your alone time, relax." The mother, whom which is standing there with toys, dishes, and clothes surrounding her, has a text bubble by her with the word "Relax?" The mother is acting as if she has never heard of the word relax, and looks as if she is going to get right down to work, just as if the children were present.

D. Even with down time, motherly instincts stop many women around the world from relaxing. The author portrays this idea by using the rhetorical strategies of cause and effect and rhetorical strategies. Both of these rhetorical strategies are shown through the text in the visual. If the father leaves, the mother is expected to sit down and relax. The assumed outcome does not seem to occur in the photo, because the mother has so much stress and cleaning to do. When the mother says "Relax?," she is implying that she does not know what this word means nor will she perform it.

E. The author is trying to get the point across that many mothers around the globe are put under a large amount of pressure and deserve time to relax. Many women may feel they do not have the time to relax, even when the hassle of their kids and husbands are eliminated. They seem to be suffocating from all of the laundry, dishes, and cleaning that is almost never ending.
