REHUGO Analysis- Quotation
A. a. “Community cannot for long feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers.” Author: Howard Thurman

b. “The life history of the individual is first and foremost an accommodation to the patterns and standards traditionally handed down in his community.” Author: Ruth Benedict

B. a . The quote: “Community cannot feed on itself; it can only flourish with the coming of others from beyond, their unknown and undiscovered brothers,” conveys that in order to progress, people with diverse backgrounds and schemas must be integrated into an existing community. If a community remains unaltered and the same people remain, then it is not likely that a community will advance with the pace of society and the world. For example, isolated tribes in Africa are rarely touched by newcomers and ideas, therefore, their communities lack in advancement as opposed to urban cities in America, which are heavily influenced by diversity and variety in people and ideals.
b. The quote: “The life history of the individual is first and foremost an accommodation to the patterns and standards traditionally handed down in his community” expresses that a person is shaped by the community that they grow up in. The traditions, morals, and values that a community possesses are to be handed down and are shown through the individual who grew up in that community. For example, in Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill A Mocking Bird, main character Scout is instilled with the mindset that the poorer, less-educated were inferior because the community of Maycomb had influenced Scout to think so and held that social class played an important role In the value of an individual. A person’s schema is primarily molded by the place and environment they are exposed to.

C. a. With the diversity of today’s American society, advancement socially and technologically continues to progress because of the influence of the various ideas from different types of people. The blending of ideas from people with various schemas brings about even greater ideas and advancements such as the iPod and the cellular phone. For example, the advancement of computer technology and capability had been altered, shaped, and continues to progress in our modern world because of the ongoing melting pot of ideas that build upon one another in our communities.
b.The diversity of people in the world is fostered by the different environments they grow up in. For example, a child growing up in a liberal city such as San Francisco, will have more liberal ideals as opposed to a child growing up in conservative Alabama. Each person lives according to what they were taught, who they are exposed to, and the ideals that their community possesses. The morals and values handed down in a community are likely to pass on to the next generations.
