REHUGO Analysis: Observation - Visual

A. Cartoon Attached - artist: Mike Lester

B. In this cartoon, the artist focuses on the idea of having a religious mosque within

American society, especially on the area of land where the World Trade Centers

used to exist. Lester acknowledges the social and political tension between Muslims

in the United States and the American government as well as the public's reaction.

C. The visual portrays a grand mosque, situated between an "Uncle Oinker's BBQ'N
Fixin's" and "Laddie Boy Dance Club." The reader can also see that "Secular Records"

is just close by. The irony of a religious building among secular places juxtaposes the

"Ground Zero Mosque"in a part of the city where almost everything around it goes

against Islam's primary beliefs. The cartoonist is effective in emphasizing that "not
in a million years" will there be a mosque on an already sacred area in American history.

D. The controversy behind the concept of building a mosque on "Ground Zero" causes

a public opposition since it was the site of 9/11. If the American government were

to allow the mosque to be built on Ground Zero, their acceptance will cause a spark in

nationalism and protest. Clearly, the cartoon supports the public's point of view as it

shows that a religious mosque does not belong in a secular American society, much

less on Ground Zero.
