REHUGO-Observation

A. Cartoon Attatched-Francis Cammuso

B. The artist, Frank Cammuso, gives a rather intense visual to the school budget in the New York State (NYS).

C. Cammuso focuses on pathos, being that the school October 20, 2010.
bus is filled with screaming children. The sign in front of the cliff says “NYS Budget Deficit” providing the logos to the cartoon (New York is in a 108.5 million dollar deficit). While quite powerful, the message isn’t too clear and doesn’t provide a proper call to action, so all it is doing is informing the reader of the situation.

D. The severe “drop” of the deficit will affect the board of education, essentially giving schools the boot when it comes to money. Teachers will be laid off and curriculum will grow ever weaker. The driver says his comment in a relaxed way (or at least for a man falling off a cliff), implying that the school board is looking at this problem as if it is just a “pothole” and not a serious threat. The sign is also there to inform travelers of the “cliff” so not observing it would be an act of ignorance, so one could say the New York State Board of Education looked past the warnings.
