REHUGO Analysis—Reading: In Search of the Good Family

A. Author of essay: Jane Howard Name of essay: In Search of the Good Family

B. In this essay, the author is mainly trying to express the qualities of what makes a “good family.” Jane Howard gives ten statements of what structures and builds a good family.

C. The authors tone in the first five sentences of her essay states that she is serious of stating her thought on the view of a “family”, as well as her few reasons as to why one needs a family to begin with, “You need one because you are human. You didn’t come from nowhere. Before you, around you, and presumably after you, too, there are others. Some of these others must matter a lot—to you, and if you are lucky, to one another. Their welfare must be nearly as important to you as your own.” her repetition also adds to the depths of the meanings behind of what makes up a good family, “Good Families..” what follows are the ten different statements that construct a good family. The first states every good family must have a ruler or a leader of some kind. One who stands out and one that can assist the family to redeem themselves. The second states that a good family has a recorder, one who assumes the position of knowing every detail past and present of the families activities and doings. The third states that a good family has members that pay more attention to their doings outside of the family rather than inside of the family. The fourth states that a good family is very hospitable to family members as well as friends, neighbors, teachers, and students. The fifth states that a good family has contradictions and inconsistencies; the family must honor their blessings and not look upon them as curses. The sixth states that a good family prizes its rituals, for their rituals tell their history if the family does not have one. The seventh states that a good family is affectionate to one another. The eighth states that a good family has a ranking of each family member, everyone has their place in the family. The ninth states that a good family has children who are very bright and independent, whom also have a future of their own. The tenth states that a good family honors their elders and shows their respects.

D. Her repetition through out the ten statements that she states show that her views are about a genuine noble family that has honor and pride in their household as well as their status outside of their house hold. The effect of her repetition adds the depth and true meaning of what structures a good family. The authors tone through out her essay as a whole is that a very observatory and precise writer. This effect would make one question the true meanings of what exactly creates or even begins to structure a good family.

  1. Jane Howard Name of essay: In Search of the Good Family - should be quotation marks, you don't underline author names or article titles.

Your opening sentence is drastically long, then you start with "her repetition" - keep track of your syntax.

Under C, 3/4 of the paragraph is summary. I need to know what the author does well more so than what she actually wrote.
