    REHUGO Analysis: Essay
    A. “In Search of the Good Family” by Jane Howard
    B. In the essay, Howard claims that one needs a clan, network, tribe, or family. In essence, Howard is saying that people need to be in some sort of community. Howard states in the second sentence, “You need one because you are human.” Essentially, she is saying that being in a community of some sort is inevitable and essential because as a human, we are bound to be in one.
    C. One piece of evidence used by Howard was the use of pathos throughout the whole essay. Howard’s overall tone was very heart-warming and hospitable by the use of emotional words like family, affectionate, and posterity. The author uses very comforting words to describe the characteristics of families; by doing this, all of the characteristics describe the emotional feeling one gets from being in a close family which appeals to pathos.
Additionally, Howard appeals to ethos by her vivid descriptions of a family. By the way she paints a picture of the perfect family; it is obvious that Howard has had experience with being in a community. Also, Howard states, “As a member in reasonable standing of six or seven tribes in addition to the one I was born to, I have been trying to figure which characteristics are common to both kinds of families.” This quote directly informs the reader that the author has experience in not only being a family she was born into, but six to seven other unique tribes.
    D. In the beginning of the fourth paragraph, Howard alludes to Aristotle and explains his quote about friendship which clarifies the definition of a friendship that the author is trying to portray. The use of this allusion to Aristotle is really effective due to Aristotle’s ethos; he is an infamous Greek philosopher that many people know, so by using Aristotle’s definition of friendship, it also helps Howard’s credibility as an author. Another rhetorical device used by Howard was the classification of a common family. While Howard classifies the ten main characteristics, she is making this essay very clear for the reader. The reader can clearly see the ten main characteristics of a common family and it is very simple and so it effectively informs Howard’s thesis that a family must have culture, hospitality, a leader, respect and so on.

  2. Essentially, she is saying that being in a community of some sort is inevitable and essential because as a human, we are bound to be in one. - repeats the two sentences that precede it.

The use of this allusion to Aristotle is really effective due to Aristotle’s ethos; he is an infamous Greek philosopher that many people know, so by using Aristotle’s definition of friendship, it also helps Howard’s credibility as an author. - Aristotle doesn't have Ethos, but he can contribute to the author's use of ethos. And, Aristotle is not infamous, he is quite famous.

I still think you can do better, this is not bad by any means, but you have done much better work.
