REHUGO Analysis #5: Political Cartoon
A. Political cartoon attached above. Cartoonist: Theodor Seuss Geisel(Dr. Seuss)
B. Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, portrays certain people of the
community as racially prejudice. He addresses those people who may be more closed
minded than others, and targets those in a community in hope of a reform of America
and its citizens.
C. Seuss has a line of people in the cartoon, representing the common people of
society. The first person is getting their mind cleaned out by a machine that Uncle
Sam is holding and saying "Gracious! Was that in my head?", while a "racial
prejudice bug" is escaping their head. This quote shows how people are sometimes in
denial of or are oblivious to racial prejudice in our community. Also, Seuss has
Uncle Sam, a very strong and recognizable figure in American society, to emphasize
how our country must come to a change. Uncle Sam was a symbol of strength and who is
chosen for battle and in this case, it is the battle against racial prejudice. By
using Uncle Sam, he is alluding to how he chooses you to be the change in society.
D. Seuss implies that racial prejudice is a bug, meaning that it is something that
annoys, hurts, and can get rid of. While reconstructing society to a racial prejudice
free community would be a great change, it is a very unlikely dream. Although we are
told that every person is equal, there is always a double standard. Depending on how
we are raised and what type of culture we are exposed to influences our perception
on the world, so everyone will always have a difference of opinion.
